Folded Leaflets, A4 Z Fold to DL
A Z fold leaflet is an A4 sheet (297 x 210mm flat) folded back and forth like a concertina into three equal panels of 99 x 210mm, finishing at DL size. Opened, it reads as one long strip, so it suits maps, timelines, step-by-step instructions and designs that flow across the panels.
We print both sides in full colour on 135gsm or 170gsm gloss, from 100 per design. Our folded leaflet guide compares Z, roll and half folds, and our folded leaflet templates mark both folds and every panel.
About this A4 Z Fold to DL spec
| Page | Left panel | Centre panel | Right panel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page 1, outside | Outside left | Outside centre | Front cover |
| Page 2, inside | Inside left | Inside centre | Back cover |
Supply two pages, each 303 x 216mm: the A4 sheet laid landscape plus 3mm bleed. At 300dpi that is 3579 x 2551px per page. The three panels are equal, 99mm each, with folds at 99mm and 198mm from the left edge of the trimmed sheet. Keep text at least 5mm from the trim and from each fold.
Folded leaflets are zero-rated where they qualify under HMRC VAT Notice 701/10, paragraphs 3.3 and 3.4: a single sheet up to A4, or up to A2 folded down to A4, on paper rather than card, ordered in a quantity of at least 50, with any form or coupon area taking up no more than 25% of the page.

A4 Z Fold to DL FAQs
What is the difference between a Z fold and a roll fold?
Both turn an A4 sheet into six DL panels. A roll fold wraps the panels inside each other, so one panel is narrower and the leaflet opens in stages. A Z fold zigzags, so all three panels are the same width and the leaflet opens out flat in one movement, which is better when a design runs across the panels. See our tri-fold leaflets for comparison.
Why are the panels of a Z fold all the same width?
Because no panel tucks inside another. Each fold goes in the opposite direction to the one before, so the panels stack like a concertina rather than nesting. That is why a Z fold splits the 297mm sheet into three equal 99mm panels, while a roll fold needs one slightly narrower panel.
Which panel is the front cover?
On our template, the front cover is the right-hand panel of the outside page and the back cover is the right-hand panel of the inside page. When the leaflet is folded, the front cover is on top. Check the order on the on-screen proof before you pay, as a panel in the wrong place is easy to miss on a flat screen.
Can an image run across all three panels?
Yes, and it is one of the best reasons to choose a Z fold. Backgrounds, photos and maps can run across both folds. Keep text and faces at least 5mm away from each fold, so nothing important lands in the crease, and remember the outside and inside pages are seen separately.
Does a Z fold leaflet fit in a DL envelope?
Yes. Folded, it is 99 x 210mm, and a DL envelope is 110 x 220mm under ISO 269, so it fits with room to spare. It also fits DL leaflet racks. Like all our folded leaflets, it is normally zero-rated for VAT where it meets the HMRC conditions shown above.
