Printing for Trades

Plumbers, electricians, builders, cleaners and other trades printing business cards, door-drop leaflets and site boards

Most trades need the same three things: a business card to leave with every customer, a leaflet for the streets where they work, and a board outside the job. We print business cards from 100, leaflets from 100 and correx boards from one, with prices that include VAT and delivery free to UK mainland addresses.

What trades print

Product Use Sizes Smallest order
Business cards Left with every quote and job, on the van dashboard, at the merchant's counter 85 x 55mm 100
Leaflets Door drops near current jobs, seasonal offers, price lists A6, A5, A4, DL 100
Correx boards Site boards, "work in progress by" signs, van and gate signs A1, A2, A3 1

Business card essentials

A trade card needs your name, your trade and the area you cover on the front, then your mobile number, email and website on the back. If you belong to a trade body or registration scheme, check that scheme's rules on using its logo or number before you add it. Keep it simple: a customer reaching for the card to call you should find the number in a second.

How many leaflets to drop

There is no reliable rule for how many replies a door drop brings, and we won't invent one. Work it out from your area instead:

  1. Choose the streets you can reach easily, ideally around a job you are doing now.
  2. Count the homes, using a map.
  3. Decide how many times you will drop to the same streets.
  4. Multiply homes by drops, add a few spares, and round up to the next quantity.

Keep a note of where each drop went and ask new customers how they heard of you, so you learn which streets are worth repeating. Leaflets are zero-rated for VAT where they qualify under HMRC Notice 701/10; business cards and correx boards are standard-rated at 20%.

Site boards (Class 3C)

In England, a board about building or similar work on the land where it stands can be displayed without consent under Class 3C of Schedule 3 to the advertisement regulations, while the work is being carried out. In general, one board is allowed on each road frontage of the site at a time. Where one person is named, the board can be up to 2 square metres if it is within 10 metres of a highway, or 3 square metres if further back, with larger allowances where several contractors are named. Boards can't be illuminated, and the standard conditions in Schedule 2 apply, including the landowner's permission. An A1 correx board is about 0.5 square metres, well within those limits. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules.

Ordering

Every upload gets a free automatic check for size, bleed, colour mode, resolution and fonts, and you approve the on-screen proof before you pay. Check the phone number on the proof yourself, because the check doesn't read your words. The dispatch time for each product is shown on its page, counted in working days from proof approval.

Trades and Construction FAQs

What should a tradesperson put on a business card?

Your name, your trade and the area you cover on the front, then your mobile number, email and website on the back. A short list of main services helps, such as boiler servicing or bathroom fitting. If you belong to a trade body or registration scheme, check its rules on using the logo or your registration number before you add them.

How many leaflets should I drop to get work?

We don't quote response rates, because they vary too much by trade, area and offer to be reliable. Instead, count the homes in the streets you want to work in, multiply by the number of drops you plan, add a few spares and round up to the next quantity. Track where each drop went, and ask new customers how they found you.

Can I put a board outside a job?

In England, Class 3C of Schedule 3 to the 2007 advertisement regulations allows a board about building or similar work on the site while the work is going on, usually one per road frontage, up to 2 square metres within 10 metres of a highway where one person is named. You need the owner's permission, so ask your customer first.

Is there VAT on trade printing?

Prices include VAT. Leaflets are zero-rated where they meet the conditions in HMRC Notice 701/10, and business cards and correx boards are standard-rated at 20%. Every paid order has a VAT invoice from Four Point Digital Limited, VAT number GB409288574, so if you are VAT registered you can usually reclaim the VAT shown.

Can I get matching cards, leaflets and boards?

Yes. Use the same logo, colours and fonts across all three, and keep your phone number and website in the same style. Our templates for business cards, leaflets and correx boards give the artwork sizes, so you can lay out each one from the same master design.
