How big is A0 compared with other sizes?
A0 is the starting point of the A series in ISO 216: a sheet of one square metre with sides in the ratio 1 to the square root of 2. Every smaller A size comes from cutting it in half.
| A0 is the same area as | Size of each |
|---|---|
| 2 x A1 | 594 x 841mm |
| 4 x A2 | 420 x 594mm |
| 8 x A3 | 297 x 420mm |
| 16 x A4 | 210 x 297mm |
Because every A size has the same shape, a design made at A1 or A3 scales up to A0 without cropping: A1 to A0 is 141%, and A2 to A0 is 200%. Our poster sizes guide compares all four poster sizes side by side.
What A0 posters are used for
A0 is for displays meant to be seen across a room or from the far side of a corridor:
- exhibition and trade show walls;
- academic and conference posters, where the event allows A0;
- venue foyers, reception walls and lobbies;
- shop launches and large window displays;
- site plans, floor plans, maps and wayfinding;
- large photo and art prints.
For an academic or conference poster, check the event's instructions before you order. Some boards take A0 portrait, others A0 landscape or only A1. If the board is smaller, an A1 poster has the same proportions, so your layout scales down unchanged.
Our A0 paper: 170gsm silk as standard
Our standard poster paper is 170gsm silk paper, a coated paper with a smooth, low sheen. It keeps photographs and colours crisp without the strong glare of gloss, which matters on a large poster lit by spotlights or a window. 170gsm is noticeably heavier than everyday office paper, so the sheet lies flat on a wall or board.
Posters are printed on one side, in full colour (CMYK). You can also choose 135 or 250gsm silk, 135, 170 or 250gsm gloss, or 150gsm satin.
Silk, gloss and satin posters are made for indoor display, and rain will spoil them. For outdoors, choose 115gsm blueback, a billboard paper for pasting up outside, or 170gsm waterproof PVC. For a rigid sign outdoors, look at a correx board, which we also print in A0. For a rigid indoor board that does not need pinning, see foamex boards. If you need something taller than A0 on its own stand, a roller banner is 2000mm high.

Setting up A0 artwork
- Page size: 847 x 1195mm, which is the 841 x 1189mm poster plus 3mm of bleed on every edge. Our guide to what bleed is explains why.
- Safe area: keep text and logos at least 10mm inside the trim.
- Images: aim for 150dpi at full size, about 5000 x 7000 pixels with bleed. That looks sharp from normal viewing distance; see our glossary entry on dpi.
- Text and logos: keep them as vectors in your PDF, so they print sharp at any size.
- File: a PDF in CMYK with fonts embedded or outlined. Our CMYK vs RGB guide explains the colour change.
Our free poster templates include A0 at the artwork size, with the bleed, trim and safe area marked, as a PDF and an SVG. If you design in Canva, our Canva to print guide covers custom sizes and the PDF download. The artwork guidelines list every file check.
Is my photo big enough for A0?
Divide the photo's long side in pixels by 46.81, the long side of A0 in inches. A 4000 x 3000 pixel photo gives 4000 ÷ 46.81 = 85dpi, which may look soft up close. A photo of about 7000 pixels on the long side reaches 150dpi. Enlarging an image in software adds pixels but not detail.
Proof and VAT
When you upload, a free automatic check looks at size, bleed, colour mode, resolution and fonts, and you approve an on-screen proof with the trim and safe area marked before you pay. The check does not read your wording, so check names and dates yourself, or add a manual proof in your basket; see proofs and file checks.
Posters are standard-rated for VAT, unlike most leaflets and booklets. Our VAT on printing page explains the difference.
