A1 Poster Printing: A1 Poster Size, Paper and Prices

Last reviewed

An A1 poster is 594 x 841mm, which is 59.4 x 84.1cm or 23.4 x 33.1 inches: half the size of A0 and twice the size of A2. It suits large shop windows, foyers, exhibitions and presentation boards. We print A1 posters single-sided, from one poster, on 170gsm silk paper as standard, and a single A1 poster on it costs £21 including VAT, delivered free to UK mainland addresses.

A1 poster size

Measurement A1 poster
Millimetres 594 x 841mm
Centimetres 59.4 x 84.1cm
Inches 23.39 x 33.11in
Area 0.5 square metres
Artwork size with 3mm bleed 600 x 847mm
Safe area Text and logos 10mm inside the trim
Pixels at 150dpi (finished size) 3508 x 4967px
Pixels at 150dpi (with bleed) 3543 x 5002px

Inches are millimetres ÷ 25.4, and pixels are inches x dpi, rounded. The A1 poster page shows the same specification with live prices.

How A1 compares with the other A sizes

A1 is A0 cut in half across its long side. Every A size in ISO 216 has the same proportions, about 1 : 1.414, so artwork moves between sizes without cropping.

Size Millimetres Compared with A1 Scale from that size to A1
A0 841 x 1189mm Twice the area 71%
A1 594 x 841mm - -
A2 420 x 594mm Half the area 141%
A3 297 x 420mm A quarter of the area 200%
A4 210 x 297mm An eighth of the area 283%

A useful shortcut: an A1 poster is exactly twice as wide and twice as tall as A3 (594 ÷ 297 = 2), so an A3 design goes to A1 at 200%. Check that photos still have enough pixels at the larger size (see below). Our poster sizes guide covers all four sizes together.

When to choose A1

A1 sits between a notice and a statement display. It is large enough for a strong image and a headline that reads from across a room, and still small enough for most frames, boards and windows.

  • Shop windows and foyers: a single bold image with a short message.
  • Exhibitions and presentation boards: a project summary, a plan or a set of photos.
  • Conference and academic posters, where the event asks for A1, or where an A0 board is not available.
  • Programmes, timetables and maps that need more room than A2.
  • Large photo and art prints for a wall or frame.

If you are unsure, mark out 594 x 841mm with tape where the poster will go. If it feels too big, A2 is half the area; if it feels too small, A0 is double.

Our A1 paper: 170gsm silk as standard

We print A1 posters in full colour on one side of 170gsm silk paper. Silk is a coated paper with a soft sheen, so colours stay rich and photographs stay sharp without the glare of gloss under shop lights. It is heavier than everyday office paper. You can also choose 135 or 250gsm silk, 135, 170 or 250gsm gloss, or 150gsm satin.

Our posters fit frames and clip frames sold in A1, because they are cut to the exact A size. A frame's mount or edge covers part of the print, so keep text well inside the 10mm safe area.

Silk, gloss and satin posters are for indoor display. For A1 outdoors, choose 115gsm blueback, a billboard paper for pasting up outside, or 170gsm waterproof PVC; for a rigid outdoor sign, a correx board stands up to rain, and for a rigid indoor display, see foamex boards. Both come in A1.

Setting up an A1 poster

  • Page size: 600 x 847mm, the A1 size plus 3mm of bleed on every edge. Run backgrounds to the edge of the page; our guide to what bleed is explains why.
  • Safe area: keep text and logos at least 10mm inside the trim.
  • Images: 150dpi at full size looks sharp from viewing distance; 300dpi suits fine detail. See our glossary entry on dpi.
  • File: a PDF in CMYK, fonts embedded or outlined, guide layers deleted. Our CMYK vs RGB guide explains why bright screen colours can shift.

Our free poster templates include an A1 file at 600 x 847mm with the trim and safe area marked, as a PDF and an SVG. For Canva, enter 600 x 847mm as a custom size; our Canva to print guide has the export settings.

Will my photo work at A1?

Divide the long side in pixels by 33.11, the long side of A1 in inches. A 4000 x 3000 pixel photo gives 4000 ÷ 33.11 = 121dpi, a little under 150dpi. For 150dpi you need about 3508 x 4967 pixels, around 17.4 megapixels. A logo copied from a website is usually far too small; use the original vector file.

Proof and VAT

Every upload gets a free automatic check of size, bleed, colour mode, resolution and fonts, then an on-screen proof to approve before you pay. Add a manual proof in your basket if you want a person to look too; see proofs and file checks and our artwork guidelines.

Posters are standard-rated for VAT at 20%, so our A1 prices include VAT. Our VAT on printing page explains why leaflets and booklets are treated differently.

Questions

What size is an A1 poster? An A1 poster is 594 x 841mm, which is 59.4 x 84.1cm or about 23.4 x 33.1 inches. With 3mm of bleed on every edge, the artwork is 600 x 847mm. Keep text at least 10mm inside the trim.

How big is A1 compared with A0 and A2? A1 is half the area of A0 (841 x 1189mm) and twice the area of A2 (420 x 594mm). It is also four times the area of A3 and eight times the area of A4. All A sizes share one shape, so designs scale between them without cropping.

How much does an A1 poster cost? One A1 poster on 170gsm silk costs £21 including VAT. Ten cost £48, which is £4.80 each. Delivery to UK mainland addresses is free.

How many pixels do I need for an A1 poster? 3508 x 4967 pixels gives 150dpi at the finished size, which looks sharp from viewing distance. With bleed, that is 3543 x 5002 pixels. For 300dpi you need 7016 x 9933 pixels.

Can I scale my A3 poster up to A1? Yes. A1 is exactly twice as wide and twice as tall as A3, so an A3 design scales to A1 at 200% with no cropping. Vector text and logos stay sharp; check that photos have enough pixels for the larger size.

Will an A1 poster fit an A1 frame? Yes. Our posters are cut to the exact A size, so an A1 poster fits a frame or clip frame sold as A1. If the frame has a mount, the visible window is smaller, so keep important content away from the edges.

What paper are A1 posters printed on? 170gsm silk as standard, printed on one side in full colour. Silk has a low sheen that keeps photos sharp without strong glare, and it is for indoor display. You can also choose other silk and gloss weights, 150gsm satin, or an outdoor paper: 115gsm blueback or 170gsm waterproof PVC.
