Stapled Booklets for Order of Service (Funerals and Weddings)
An order of service booklet is most often A5 (148 x 210mm) with 8 pages: a front cover, six inside pages and a back cover. We print A5 and A4 stapled booklets with 8, 12, 16, 20 or 24 pages, on 170gsm silk throughout, from 50 copies. The cover is the same paper as the inside pages, which keeps the booklet light and easy to hold during the service.
Pages come in fours because each sheet is folded in half and stapled through the fold. If your plan comes to 10 pages, round up to 12 and use the spare pages for a photo, a poem or a page for notes. The covers count, so plan the front cover and the back cover as two of the pages.
Setting up the file. Make each page the A5 size plus 3mm bleed on every edge, 154 x 216mm, and keep text at least 8mm from the trim, with a little more on the edge nearest the staples. Upload one PDF with single pages in reading order, from the front cover to the back cover. Our booklet template marks the trim, bleed and safe area, and the page counts guide explains how the pages fall.
Checking it. The automatic file check looks at size, bleed, colour mode, resolution and fonts. It does not read your words. Before you approve the on-screen proof, have someone read every name, date and hymn number aloud.
Timing. The dispatch time for your options is shown on the booklet product page, counted in working days from proof approval. Most mainland deliveries arrive 1 to 2 working days after dispatch, as an estimate. Approve the proof as early as you can, and contact us first if the service is very close.
Booklets are zero-rated where they qualify under HMRC Notice 701/10.
How Order of Service (Funerals and Weddings) uses Stapled Booklets
Funeral order of service
A photo and full name on the cover, the dates of birth and death, then the order of proceedings, hymns, readings and a thank-you on the back. An 8-page A5 booklet fits most services.
Wedding order of service
Both names, the date and the venue on the cover, then the ceremony running order, readings, hymns or songs and the wedding party. Couples often add a page with a photo or a short welcome.
Memorial or celebration of life
A longer booklet of 12 or 16 pages leaves room for a tribute, photos across the years and words from family and friends, as well as the running order.
Worked example: a funeral for about 80 people
The family plans a cover, four pages of running order and hymns, a page of photos and a back-cover thank-you: 8 pages. With about 80 guests plus spares, they order 100 A5 booklets and approve the proof as soon as the vicar confirms the hymns.
Design tips
- Use one clear photo on the cover. Scan a printed photo rather than photographing it with a phone, and check the proof for the resolution warning.
- Keep the type at a comfortable size. Many guests read in low light. Hymn words set in small type are hard to follow.
- Put the running order on the first inside pages, so people can find their place quickly.
- Plan in fours. Sketch the booklet as 8, 12 or 16 boxes before you start designing, and decide what goes on each page.
- Keep text 8mm from the trim and a little more near the staples, as the booklet template shows.
- Read the proof aloud with someone who didn't write it. Names, dates and hymn numbers are the usual mistakes.

Stapled Booklets for Order of Service (Funerals and Weddings): FAQs
What is the smallest number of booklets I can order?
Booklets start at 50 copies, then 100, 250 and 500. For a small family service, 50 is often enough. Prices and minimum quantities are per design, so if you need two versions, such as one with a different cover photo, each version counts as a separate design.
Should I choose an A5 or an A4 booklet?
A5 (148 x 210mm) is the usual size for an order of service. It is easy to hold and is the size most people expect. Choose A4 (210 x 297mm pages) if you want larger type for older guests or have a lot of text, such as full hymn words for several hymns.
Can I send the booklet as spreads?
Please send single pages in reading order, from the front cover to the back cover, in one PDF. Don't use the Book fold or booklet printing setting in Word or a printer driver, which rearranges the pages into printer spreads. Each page should be 154 x 216mm for A5, including 3mm bleed on every edge.
What paper are the booklets printed on?
Booklets are printed on 170gsm silk throughout. The cover is the same paper as the inside pages, which is called self cover. Silk has a smooth, low-sheen surface that suits both photos and text, so a cover photo and the hymn words inside print on the same paper.
Will a person check my booklet before printing?
Every upload gets a free automatic check for size, bleed, colour mode, resolution and fonts, and you approve an on-screen proof before you pay. If you want a person to check the file first, add a manual proof in your basket. The fee is shown there. Neither check reads your wording, so check names and dates yourself.
